I moved to North Dakota for work in December 2014, having lived in Pennsylvania for the vast majority of my life. When I first arrived, I spent a lot of time in my car driving around, trying to familiarize myself with the landscape. My initial impressions placed it at odds with my experience back east, which prevented me from being able to see a new environment.
Building Right Angles emerged out of this experience. For this performance, I would stop my car, set up my camera, and photograph myself lying down in different locations throughout the Bakken region. This gesture is about aligning my expectations for the landscape with the reality of my experience.
