2018

During the summer of 2018, I received a fellowship from the Nagel Institute at Calvin University. This gave me the opportunity to travel to China alongside eleven other North American artists. Here, I spent two weeks studying art and religion in Beijing, Nanjing, and Shanghai. Following our time, we were asked to make works of art in response to the experience.

A Quiet Orbit is a comment on my encounter with the Great Firewall. For this piece, I went online and found eight photographs that depicted each phase of the moon. The photos were sourced from a search engine that is currently blocked in China. After finding them, I printed them out and placed them in a black envelope that was then sealed, never to be opened.
