A few blocks from my house sits a middle school that has been abandoned for over 20 years. Growing up in the Pennsylvania Rust Belt, it was common to see empty buildings and vacant lots in various states of decay. Due to declining industry and a shrinking population, I realized in high school that I would need to leave the area to find a job.
This performance was done in front of the middle school. I began by making a graphite rubbing of the sidewalk. From there, I proceeded to lay down paper on top of the previous drawing and continued the process until the texture from the sidewalk was no longer being recorded. What’s left are a series of eleven drawings that gradually obscure the initial source.
