On June 21, 2020, I observed a sunset outside Torrey, Utah. Torrey has been recognized by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) as Utah's first International Dark Sky Community. This is "a town, city, municipality or other legally organized community that has shown exceptional dedication to the preservation of the night sky."
Silent Light is a conceptual gesture that asks: what are the consequences of generating content that has the potential to destroy someone else's work? After recording a video of the aforementioned sunset, I posted it on Vimeo. However, as I considered the community of Torrey, I wanted to find a way to meaningfully contribute to their project. At that point, I realized that I had to permanently hide the video.
