The distance from Lowell to Concord, depending on traffic, is anywhere between 20 to 30 minutes. Jack Kerouac was born in Lowell in 1922, 60 years after Henry David Thoreau passed away. When writing On the Road, it’s thought that Kerouac might’ve drawn inspiration for the title from Thoreau.
This summer, my family and I visited Walden Pond. Walden is fascinating because it is not only where Thoreau conducted his experiment in deliberate living, but is now heavily populated and overly commercial. To visit Walden is to reinforce the mythological dimension of this site, while also risking its destruction. See here.
Born Again is a video I made while taking a walk around Walden with my wife and daughter. The video captures the sun reflecting off the water, while the sound is gathered from different points around the pond. It's no longer possible to experience this site in the manner of Thoreau. I'm interested in what it means to have lost that opportunity, while also working with what I've inherited.
