Work > On Exactitude in Science

On Exactitude in Science is an ongoing drawing project that uses paper airplanes as drawing tools. For these installations, I cover the nose of each plane in graphite before throwing it at the wall. Wherever a plane hits, I drill a hole and insert a marking flag.

Marking flags are tools for surveying and mapping, but here their placement is determined by the arbitrary flight patterns of paper airplanes. While the scale and color of the installation can change from one location to another, the flags continue to serve the same purpose. The final composition suggests scientific precision, but is actually generated by chance.

The project's title is taken from a short story of the same name by Jorge Luis Borges.
